These days there is a lot to worry about. Post covid recovery is slow, two terrible wars, unclear financial futures, environmental degradation, paralyzed Congress, just to name a few issues. This piece reflects the disturbances with many slits and discontinuities in the weaving. However, it is hopeful that we will return to some kind of normality, slowly and with improvements as new generations come along.

Dynamic Energy

Dynamic Energy

is a study in the eccentric wefts. In it the wefts are no longer perpendicular to the warps and thus there is a lot of surface movement in the piece. It also explains the scalloped edges which are reacting to the different tension in this weaving. By using black, grey and white against the deep red background, the movement is very apparent and contributes to the dynamic flow of this tapestry.

Shift

Shift is a tapestry about the constant movement of tectonic plates. I wanted to provide a cross section of the slippage and shifting that happens over time. It is also a metaphor for the changing times we are living in. It creates a great deal of uncertainly and anxiety as to how we address the future knowing that much we value about our planet and our civility is being lost. The small bits of green are fragments of hope that we can find some stability and rebuild.

Firetrack

Firetrack is a small tapestry that was made as part of an environmental show that travelled in England. It is a commentary on the dreaded fires and and the dynamic nature of their movement and scale. Small bits of synthetic threads run along the flames and add a bit of “spark”-le to the piece.

Flow 10: Twisted

“Flow 10: Twisted” is part of a series exploring the eccentric weft, when the weft is no longer perpendicular to the warp. It produces a unique surface tension that creates a bas relief in tapestry. Often the results are a little unpredictable but the more I make them; I am able to see how they will affect the cloth.

The title reflects my state of mind in this era of Covid 19, lack of leadership and general malaise across the land. Even the edges are shaped to emphasize the tensions in the piece.
