Cafe
Cafe at Night. This canvas has a convoluted year long history. The canvas itself began as an underpainting for a red and white Volkswagen bus. Jim wasn’t happy with the red on the bus panels and it became the first canvas he painted over. On a sunny day while his wife was in an appointment nearby February 2016 Jim sat and read and photographed inside the Duboce Park Cafe San Francisco. It was the yellow chair in the foreground that became the focus of the Cafe painting. The painting was finished by April but there was still a sense that there was something missing. During the fall of 2016 Jim revisited the painting and began to experiment with a red ketchup bottle on the nearest table. This felt better. Soon there was a second bottle and then a third. The “scars” left by the Volkswagen bus are still visible on the canvas. 24×36 oil on canvas.
