About The Artist
Sarah DeParis | Fine Art
I am an oil painter inspired by the connection between humans and animals—particularly horses. My painting style is realistic, but with painterly brush strokes and surprising colors. I often use a vivid underpainting to make my subjects seem to glow. Since I was a child, I’ve known that there was something about being in the company of horses that brought me out of my head and back into my body. My goal is to portray that feeling and invite others to experience it as well. Through my work, I hope to inspire others to look more deeply at the natural world around them and contemplate what it means to truly be present with our fellow creatures.
My background is unusual in that I am an eye and eyelid surgeon. I bring the skills from my past career to my art through my eye for detail, symmetry, patterns, and beauty. Unsurprisingly, I love to focus on the eyes of my subjects, bringing their unique personalities to life.
As a child growing up in New Jersey, my loves were drawing and horses (and drawing horses). I took a long detour away from art to become an eye surgeon and moved to California for my ophthalmology residency at UCSF. I finally found my way back to art after leaving clinical practice in 2023. I’m inspired by the grace, power, and beauty of horses and the genuine love and friendship of dogs. My horse, Macho, and my two dogs, Henry and Chloe, provide much of the inspiration for my work.
