About The Artist
Creating a painting is a bit like a walk in the woods for me. I approach my art with a sense of adventure, using experimental techniques along with tried and true methods, but I’m always hoping for a surprising and delightful discovery. A key component of my art is the use of monoprints created using a gel plate. Sometimes the prints are created with actual plants, other times with stencils. I make my own tree stencils based on the silhouettes of trees I encounter on my walks and other adventures. Using these prints and multiple layers of paint, my mixed media works celebrate both the wonder of art making and the beauty of nature. I hope my art encourages you to take a closer look, at both art and nature – and perhaps inspires a new perspective on your next walk in the woods.
Lucy Ames has been making and teaching art for decades. She teaches art at two Berkeley Schools and runs summer art camps for kids in her El Cerrito backyard studio. While she’s always had her own artistic pursuits including encaustic collage, jewelry making and kiln formed glass, it wasn’t until the pandemic slowed us all down that she started painting every day. For the last five years, whenever she’s not teaching, she can be found hiking the trails or in her studio painting and printing the inspiring shapes of nature. Always exploring new ways to approach her art, Lucy loves combining her well practiced intuition with the element of chance that her varied materials and methods provide.

Nine members of the Creatives by the Bay couldn’t be more excited to exhibit together in one place during Marin Open Studios. From atmospheric to abstract, painterly to contemporary, this diverse collection offers a glimpse of our individual inspirations and journeys. The work ranges in size from very large canvases (6’ plus) to smaller works on paper and birch panel framed and ready to hang. Come find the perfect gift for someone you love – or for yourself!
