About The Artist
The simple act of laying pastel onto sanded paper is visual, tactile and a delight to me. Pastel, nearly pure pigment is velvety and luminous. I paint what surrounds us in our everyday world and wonder what stories they have to tell. Old used and rusted items have quite a history, if only they could talk. Cast shadows on sidewalks set the mood for a walk on a sunny day. Fallen leaves and drooping sunflowers encourage us to revel in glorious colors before winter arrives. Let your mind wonder and enjoy their stories!
Painting has been a part of Janis’ life for 30+ years. Her eye for composition was shaped while working in Advertising and Interior Design. She picked up her first pastel stick at Barbara Lawrence’s 2008 class and fell in love with the medium. Janis continues building on skills with workshop instruction, art retreats and private classes. She is a member of The Pastel Society of the West Coast, an annual participant in the Juniper Island Art Festival (Canada), Marin Open Studios and has received Merit awards in the juried Marin County Fair.
