About The Artist

Artist Statement

My goal as a fine art photographer is to create a vision of place or object that may feel familiar but brings a unique interpretation to the viewer. Color plays only a minimal role in my work.  I love the play of dark against light and the clarity of shapes that emerge once color is subdued or removed. I am excited by the drama of pure blacks against clean whites and I strive to put a touch of melancholy or mystery into many of my images.
My work starts with a photograph, often created with a film camera.  From there, I seek to create something that goes beyond the literal and becomes a metaphor.  I am constantly searching for scenes, whether in nature or created by humans, that convey timelessness but also express the impermanence of the world as we know it.
I rely heavily on historic processes for printing, primarily platinum palladium and photogravure and I love to explore with unique papers and textures.  Many of my images are printed on kozo and gampi papers, hand made in Japan in the traditional way.
