About The Artist

Artist Statement

Painting and art making is a magical, mysterious process for me. I sit down to a blank canvas with an empty mind and see what emerges. It’s like dreaming on canvas, following each impulse, unfolding as it happens, and revealing messages to be felt or interpreted later.

My current work begins with collage and spray paint, and my subject reveals itself through the layers, much like a photograph developing in its bath. The collage materials I use bring in elements of poetry, music, and organic patterns and shapes. The images I weave in through the layers with paint are natural elements inspired by my daily nature walks, or more human emotional tales told through personality-full skulls or portraiture. I enjoy metallic paints for the multifaceted dynamic surface they give the work, changing with the light or perspective.

My work combines realism and abstraction – Drawing and painting realistically from observations of life attunes my eye and mind and focuses my attention and awareness to the beauty and presence of the moment.

Drawing and painting from the imagination and soul reveals deeper layers of reality and connects me to feelings and spirits that sometimes lie just outside the periphery of our vision.

My work contains my love for the nature world – it’s beauty, intelligence, intricacies, cycles, movement – and my grief for its damage.

I also explore and express the range and depth of what it means to be human – joy, love, grief, peacefulness, searching, excitement, rest, angst, introspection, celebration, confusion, loss, humor. We are such complex creatures with moods and states and emotions that change like the weather, each of us with our own microclimates and tendencies, but all sharing a common palette of feeling.
