Returning to Marin Open Studios this May, acclaimed artist Arlene Whiting invites viewers into a world of warmth and nostalgia through her genre scenes. A longtime resident of Marin County, Arlene specializes in capturing the vibrant, fleeting moments of local life—from children playing at the beach to families gathering at the farmers’ market.
At 88 years old, her work is a testament to a lifetime of dedicated practice, characterized by a fusion of traditional drawing skill and a modern use of transparent oil layers.
Whether you are a longtime collector or a first-time visitor, exploring Arlene’s studio offers a rare opportunity to witness the timeless technique of one of Marin’s most enduring artistic voices.
It has been my honor to receive numerous awards and accolades, including first place at the Marin County Fair in 2017 and first place in the “Best and Brightest” show in Scottsdale in 2016. These recognitions affirm my commitment to exploring new techniques and pushing the boundaries of my artistic expression.
Biography:
Born and nurtured amidst the vibrant hues of Southern California, Arlene Lewetzow’s artistic journey began early. A precocious talent, she found herself immersed in the world of art while still a high school student, earning a scholarship to the prestigious Chouinard Art Institute. This early immersion ignited a lifelong passion, leading her to further her studies at Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles and ultimately culminating in a BFA from the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland.
Under the tutelage of esteemed American Impressionists Jean Henry, Don Hatfield, and Caroline Anderson, Lewetzow’s dedication and talent have been recognized by numerous accolades. These include “Best in Show” at the National Open Show of the Marin Society of Artists for her evocative “Flute Player” (2012), “First Place – Best and Brightest” from the Scottsdale Artists School for her poignant “Portrait of a Young Black Woman” (2015), and “Best in Show – Members Show” from the Marin Society of Artists for her captivating “Her Song” (2015). Her work has also garnered prestigious awards such as the Publisher’s Prize at the California State Fair for “Farmers’ Market” (2016) and “First Place – Painting” at the Marin County Fair for her moving “Family Tradition” (2017), which also received a Special Award from the esteemed Seager/Gray Gallery in Mill Valley, California.
Lewetzow’s artistic journey continues to flourish, with her work currently being represented by esteemed galleries such as Richardson Gallery in Reno, Nevada; Alma Gilbert Gallery in Burlingame, California; and Kertesz Gallery in San Francisco, California
