About The Artist
My current work has been greatly influenced by the Northern California landscape around me. The rolling hills of the wine country, the fog softening the lines of the horizon and creating whispers of brush strokes across the valleys. I paint the memories of these moments.
I begin my paintings with dark color tones and quick brushstrokes. It’s a playful time for me and warming up time to experiment and be in the moment. I allow the paint to tell me where to go. Allowing drips, scraping and scratching to create texture and patterns that sometimes only accidents can create. Then I begin to add decorative papers and thicker brighter colors into my palette. The process is an ebb and flow between adding and subtracting. Always being aware of keeping the energy of the brushstrokes and the energy of the painting moving.
On the days that I’m not working in my studio, I’m inspiring others to find their creative side. Teaching the art of fearless creativity, unplugging, and letting go.
Alex Cole, has been a painter for over 30 years. Her work can be found in private collections throughout the US, Europe and Canada. She has been featured in Rue Magazine, Sonoma Magazine, CA Home, and many more. Her work was published in “Wild Lands” and “Artist of the Bay Area” by Jen Tough. Was the featured artist for Pottery Barn – original art collections.
Alex Cole is best known for her landscape paintings inspired by her travels and the Northern California landscapes around her. Rather than painting specific places she paints the memories and the feeling of a place, giving way to a more abstract interpretation thus allowing the audience to tap into their own memories of place.
Her newest collection of paintings is inspired by contrast. Using acrylic paint, pencil and mixed media she explores the nuances of color, line and texture. Inspired by the contrast within the expansive landscape of Northern California and her travels. The contrast in texture and surface found in nature, architecture and the moments in our everyday life that may get unnoticed. This collection is about bringing you in to pause, encouraging you to journey through the details and the beautiful shifts from surface to surface.
When she’s not painting, she’s teaching. Alex shares her secrets for tapping into the creative space within all of us, through her workshops and retreats at scenic locations throughout the Bay Area and abroad. By drawing inspiration from nature, experimenting with collage and texture, Alex teaches her students how to love each accidental-wonder that makes every piece of artwork a unique expression of you and your surroundings.
