Street performers extraordinaire light up the night in the square before the great Gothic Cathedral of Notre-Dame in central Paris. The intrepid troupe juggles flaming clubs, twirls blazing batons, tosses hoops of fire and breathes great dragon breath blasts of ignited gasoline. The grand finale is a climax of flame, smoke, sparklers and fire crackers. The crowd roars and cheers at this display of bravado, bravery and daring that is spectacular, unexpected, primal. Shadows dance along the medieval stones, reminding us that street performers have entertained here through the centuries, celebrating the passion of Paris nights.
I traveled alone to Paris, before the pandemic, before the fire. Marveling at the layers of history visible everywhere, I delightedly photographed ancient stones, medieval architecture, art nouveau designs and modern installations, sometimes all in the same frame. Impressed that street artists are allowed (and paid) to perform before treasured monuments, I stood in the back to watch this evening show. As the performers passed the hat and people left, I worked my way to the edge of their safety circle. With my front row seat and travel tripod I enjoyed the repeated production, ready to capture their dazzling lights with time exposures. Bravo!
