“Hoka Hey” From the “How The West Was Won” series
2022 by M Kosturos
I added the picket fence to a vintage postcard depicting native Americans evicting European squatters from their land. Hoka Hey is a Lakota Sioux battle cry that translates to, “It’s a good day to die.” My understanding is that this was an acknowledgment that the warriors were at peace with the possibility of death because their affairs were in order and giving their lives to protect their tribe was an honor. As of this writing, the Ukrainian people are defending their land from foreign invaders. I sense that many of them are fighting evoking the same spirit of conviction and resolve.
By the way, this battle scene is total bullshit. It would have never gone down like this. Funny that this is the scene designed to appeal to Americans. After all, the postcard is meant to be sold…
