I photographed Yellow Wall / Lady in early November at the turn of this century in San Miguel de Allende. The yellow painted church provided an exceptionally unusual background for someone passing by. I stationed myself across the street from that very unique yellow-hued church hoping that someone interesting would walk by. I was able to sit on a small window sill of a tortilla shop while I waited for that perfect person or persons to come into the picture before the light changed.
I was rewarded for my patience when, after about an hour, that ‘perfect’ person walked by. The overcast light and the simple, monumental architecture created the perfect stage for this dignified woman with her shawl and cane.
This massive yellow church, built in 1847, provided me with one of the most interesting backgrounds I’ve ever encountered and the lovely woman added scale, grace and humanity to this composition.
This image was taken with a Nikon FM2 using Kodak Ektacolor professional film and printed by Zeny in Palm Desert, CA in a traditional darkroom. FujiColor Crystal Archive paper, a Beseler enlarger and a Kreonite processor were used in making the finished Fine Art prints.
