I have one piece on display to view, to touch, to sit on: a walnut carved seat stool. I received my first commission for this type of stool during the MOS 2006. I’ve been building and developing them ever since. The stools are sturdily made of 1″ thick legs. The seats are blocks of walnut weighing 10 lbs. After machining and sanding, the seats weigh 3.4 lbs. That’s a lot of chips and sawdust. The circular style of the footrests impart tremendous strength to the structure. The x-braces under the seat provide enough stress distribution to support a 300 lb person. All the joinery (the technique for holding wooden objects together) is traditional mortise and tenon. The seats are glued together with two or three blocks of wood and carved with a combination of power and hand tools, followed by hours of hand sanding. The finish is a mix of oil and polyurethane, which is applied with rags and wiped off four or five times to build a durable, waterproof finish that only requires a damp rag for maintenance. On some very porous woods, like mahogany, the finish may need another application of oil after a year, a very simple, foolproof and enjoyable exercise which increases the luster of the finish.
The stools are available in any species of wood, in different designs, and different dimensions. The Walking Tables I innovated have received a lot of interest and awards. Going through my work, please notice the variety and scope of the commissions I have received.
