About The Artist
My adult life has always been involved in some way with the visual arts. After receiving three degrees in the practice, history of and theories associated with art, my career in teaching and administering three art institutions I thought it was time to get back to my original interest when I finally retired…studio practice.
The theories about what constitutes a successful work is grounded in the post graduate classes I took at Illinous Stae University with Dr. Harold Gregor, a gifted teacher and painter who still is shown with the Gray Gallery in Chicago.
My doctoral dissertation focused on color theories refined by such masters at Paul Cezanne, Henri Matisse and later Richard Diebenkorn. My work, which has always remained true to depicting the representational image in some form and has also been primarily focused on the power of color to convey an emotional message while being organized with concern for the picture plan on which the message is created.
My current work is as series called “The Essence of Truth”. It refers to the essences of personal handling of subject matter and techniques that are unique to various artists who are considered masters of their craft. I try to capture that essence, not copy a particular work, but the uniqueness the artist brought to the work. RecentlyI have been fortunate to have several collectors understand what I am doing and now have my work in their collections. For this I am grateful. Art is usually made alone in a studio space. When it finds its way onto a wall where the owner finds enjoyment having it nearby, it is gratifying to the artist who created it!
Over fifty years exhibiting, organizing exhibitions, jurying competitions, directing art museums. Also have a history of working in studios, kitchens, dining rooms, garages and classrooms to create work that sometimes is really good and sometimes is a failure. The key is to know the difference.
