About The Artist

Artist Statement

The subject of my work comes from things I have seen, using nature as the starting point. Sometimes I stay with the initial impulse but other times if I allow myself to keep looking and let thoughts or memories come up, and the work winds up being quite different than where I started. I like working in this combined way as it becomes a treasure hunt-following the clues until I arrive, somewhere. Most of my work is in oils or acrylics, as well as with ink on paper. My work is informed by artists who might slip something mysterious or dreamy into them. I hope that my work can get the viewer to keep thinking about the work, keep wanting to look at it even if they do not know why.

Biography

I have always had a love of the physicality of the natural world, with a deep sense of the wonder of life. My work has been influenced by Monet, Hockney, Cezanne, Van Gough, Diebenkorn, Dodd, Burchfield, Welliver and others. Painting and drawing given me the opportunity to allow all my thoughts and feelings to show up.

I knew I would be an artist since I was eight years old when first visiting the Old Mill Art School in Elizabethtown, NY.

I began my studies in earnest starting in 1965 at the Montclair Museum, Montclair, NJ. During my first two years of college at Goddard College, Plainfield, Vt, I studied sculpture and dance. In the fall of 1968, I took a hiatus from Goddard College, lived in Cambridge, MA, and took classes at the Museum School and Boston University, Boston, MA, exploring drawing, sculpture, and ceramics. After transferring to California College of Arts and Crafts, Oakland, CA in 1970, with a focus on painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, and dance. I received my BFA in 1973. Then later received an MFA in 1982 cum laude in Sculpture again from California College of Arts and Crafts.

I have paintings at the Zuckerberg/Chan Acute Care Center in San Francisco, CA, and at the Stanford Cancer Center in Palo Alto, CA. My painting “Along the way,” 36” x 48,” oil on canvas was selected to be shown for a two-year period through the Arts in the Embassies program in the US Embassy in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Currently I have two paintings at the US Embassy in Turkmenistan, curtesy of the Arts in the Embassies through 2027. I attended two residencies at Vermont Studio Center, Johnson, Vermont in 1999 and 2008. I have taught painting and drawing privately and at the College of Marin for over 20 years.
