Biography

About the Artist
Elaine West earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts with a specialization in drawing and painting, and enjoyed 3 decades working in graphic design for both print and the web. After retiring, she refocused on fine art, and the joys of putting real paint to canvas, starting with plein air (open air) landscapes in oils. Since that time she has participated in both Marin and Point Reyes Open Studios, and has had solo exhibits throughout Marin. Her work has been featured in Marin magazine and been exhibited and sold through local galleries and businesses. In this time West expanded her range with studio work and larger abstracts, while still enjoying plein air painting all over Marin county and in her travels.

Hard to categorize
Known for using varied approaches and a broad range of subjects, Elaine’s paintings can be described in categories or styles, from tight realism to painterly impressionism and abstracts. Drawn to traditional landscapes and subjects, the funky nooks of Sausalito’s northern waterfront, moody interiors, boats, and photo realistic still life compositions, Elaine is continuously exploring and pushing her painting beyond the confines of her early training and the precision of her career in graphics.

Since no show of hers would be complete without boats and houseboat scenes, she’s included original paintings and large canvas PRINTS of a couple favorites from that realm.
