About The Artist

Artist Statement

I create paintings that are rooted in nature but are not representational, inspired by time spent outdoors and my inner drive for exploration and travel. My process involves painting and repainting as I search for something new and unknown, leaving traces of the many decisions I’ve made along the way as a marking of time. I often add materials like pigments and glass beads to create different effects, and also give me less control over the outcome. I want an experience of discovery and possibility in both the making and viewing of a painting.

Biography

Deborah Hamon is an artist, adventurer, nature lover, trail runner, and mother. She was born in Adelaide, Australia, and lives in the San Francisco Bay Area. Hamon has an MFA from the University of California, Davis, and in 2013 was part of The Arctic Circle Residency where she created The Polar Pom- Pom Project, to connect kids in a conversation about art and climate change.

Inspired by her time spent outdoors and her inner drive for exploration and travel, she creates paintings that are rooted in nature but are not representational. She says: “When I paint, I feel like I’m exploring—there’s this sense of discovery and possibility that keeps me curious and hopeful.”

Hamon has shown her work at numerous museums and galleries nationally and internationally, including Frozen Earth: Images from the Arctic Circle, at The Noyes Museum of Art in New Jersey, and Art on the Edge Biennial, at the New Mexico Museum of Art. Her work was on view in Tel Aviv, Israel for 5 years as part of the Art in Embassies program. She has been published widely, won many awards, and can be found in numerous collections including the Crocker Art Museum, Triton Museum of Art, di Rosa Center for Contemporary Art, and the West Collection.
