About The Artist

Artist Statement

My motivation to create stems from a desire to explore the complexity of human emotions and connections—art is my way of untangling these threads and making sense of the world. Nature has always been a profound influence on my work, with its raw beauty and endless cycles of renewal serving as a metaphor for the creative process. I am deeply inspired by the interplay of textures and materials, which is why my work often incorporates mixed media. Layering paper, paint, and found objects allows me to tell stories that feel tactile and immersive, bridging the gap between the physical and emotional. For me, creating art is not just about visual appeal but about building layers of meaning that invite viewers to linger, reflect, and connect with their own experiences. While I’ve been an artist for many years, I continuously research, experiment, and learn from others who push boundaries and make bold decisions.

Biography

Camille Kouyoumdjian is a mixed-media artist whose work explores the dialogue between humanity and the natural world—how we alter it, depend on it, and find our place within it. Of multicultural heritage, she draws on diverse aesthetic and philosophical influences that inform a worldview grounded in both reverence and curiosity for the earth. Her practice reflects a lifelong fascination with the natural rhythms that shape our environments: the slow layering of rock and sediment, the pulse of tides, the changing light that moves across the horizon. Through her art, she seeks to reawaken the quiet sense of wonder that comes from paying attention to the living world and to inspire a spirit of stewardship rooted in connection rather than control.

Kouyoumdjian’s commitment to environmental sustainability is woven into both the subject matter and process of her work. She gravitates toward materials that tell a story of renewal—hand-painted collage papers, reclaimed fibers, natural pigments, wax, and found organic textures. Her mixed-media approach reflects a belief that meaning arises through relationships: between materials, between layers, and between the viewer and the work itself. Each piece becomes a small ecosystem of its own, in which disparate elements coexist in fragile balance. By blending traditional and upcycled materials, she offers a tactile reminder that creativity can emerge from what is cast aside and that beauty can arise from cycles of transformation.

Her process is deeply intuitive, guided less by predetermined outcomes than by a conversation with the materials themselves. She builds surfaces slowly, layering and dissolving color, scraping back to reveal traces of what came before. The resulting compositions are at once physical and ephemeral—mirroring the erosion and regeneration found in nature. Kouyoumdjian describes her studio practice as a kind of listening: listening to the rhythm of her brush, to the grain of the paper, to the quiet suggestions of texture and light. This meditative approach transforms painting into an act of ecological empathy—an attempt to move at the pace of the natural world rather than to dominate it.

At the heart of her work lies a collaborative relationship with the viewer. Kouyoumdjian’s paintings do not seek to depict nature as something distant or idealized but to invite viewers into an active dialogue with it. Through abstract forms and layered surfaces, she leaves space for interpretation and reflection, encouraging a shared experience of curiosity and care. Her goal is not to prescribe meaning but to evoke memory—to remind viewers of their own encounters with earth, water, and sky. In doing so, she hopes to spark both emotional and ethical connection: to shift our perception of nature from a backdrop to a shared home.

Her artistic journey began outside of formal art institutions. For many years, Kouyoumdjian pursued stability and professional success before returning to her creative roots, realizing that art was not a luxury but an essential way of being in the world. This later-in-life embrace of her artistic identity informs the honesty and humility in her work. The process of reclaiming creativity became intertwined with rediscovering balance, presence, and belonging within the natural environment. These experiences continue to shape her philosophy that creativity, like nature, thrives in cycles of experimentation, decay, and renewal.

Drawing from her homes in coastal California and Maine, Kouyoumdjian draws daily inspiration from the elemental beauty surrounding her—mist rising over tidal flats, the textures of lichen and bark, the shifting colors of dawn and dusk. The region’s rugged landscape and ever-changing weather patterns have become integral to her practice, reminding her that art, like the land, is alive and evolving. Her works often begin outdoors, where she collects impressions, sketches, and materials, then translates those observations into the studio. There, she reinterprets the sensory experience of being in nature—the smell of salt air, the softness of fog, the resilience of rock—through abstract form and texture.

Kouyoumdjian’s process reflects her belief that sustainability begins not only with materials but with mindset. By working slowly, embracing imperfection, and reusing what might otherwise be discarded, she resists the culture of haste and consumption that defines much of contemporary life. Her art becomes a quiet act of resistance and restoration: a reminder that slowing down is itself a form of care, both for the planet and for the self.

Across her body of work, recurring motifs of rhythm, layering, and translucence speak to cycles of renewal and connection. Her pieces invite the viewer to look closely—to trace the shifting interplay of color and form, to sense the movement that exists beneath stillness. Each painting becomes an environment to inhabit, not merely to observe. The dialogue between depth and surface mirrors the delicate balance between human presence and the wider ecological systems we inhabit.

In recent years, Kouyoumdjian has exhibited widely in regional and national galleries and has been active in environmentally engaged art initiatives. Her mixed-media paintings have been featured in juried exhibitions in Maine, Washington, D.C., New York, and California. She continues to expand her practice through teaching and community collaborations, leading workshops that encourage participants to use reclaimed materials and natural pigments as a form of creative sustainability. Through these projects, she aims to show that art-making can serve as both personal reflection and collective environmental dialogue.

Kouyoumdjian views the studio as a microcosm of the world’s ecosystems—an ever-changing space of experimentation, balance, and response. Her work asks what it means to live in reciprocity with the Earth, to listen to its quiet intelligence, and to let that awareness guide our creative and daily lives. In this way, her art becomes not simply an aesthetic pursuit but an inquiry into coexistence: how we can live artfully and responsibly within the larger landscape that sustains us.

Through her practice, Camille Kouyoumdjian reminds us that the natural world is not separate from human experience but deeply interwoven with it. Her art invites us to slow down, to rediscover our capacity for wonder, and to recognize that creativity—like ecology—is a shared, ongoing act of renewal.
