About The Artist
Over the years, I gravitated towards mosaic as an artistic expression. I enjoy the process of sculpting shapes, collecting recycled glass/ceramics, assembling each mosaic piece. I appreciate that mosaic art can take the form of small objects to treasure or large community projects to share. There is an aspect of ‘putting things together’ that I enjoy in the mosaic creative process – it is intuitive, meditative, destructive/constructive, and transformative. One object becomes something entirely different.
With that said, it is difficult for me to imagine only working in one medium. For many years I watched the ceramic process from afar, learning about form and different methods of firing and glazing by witnessing talented ceramic artists work. I was formally introduced to the unpredictable nature of clay when I began to create clay pieces to incorporate into my mosaic projects. One thing led to another, and I began to explore hand building and the sgraffito process.
Each piece I make somehow influences the next. Subject matter or pattern translates from form to form and gives me new ideas every day. With mosaic artwork I embrace color and with sgraffito/clay I limit color and embrace shape and the illustrative process.
