About The Artist
A former teacher remarked on a recent photo, “Nice. You notice things.” I am an artist who records with a camera, translates through pencil and ink, and invents with cut paper and felt. All are informed and inspired by awe in nature, from panorama to minutiae.
Photography: I begged for and received an Instamatic camera at age 6. I was given an SLR at sixteen, which saw me through RISD and beyond. “This is how I see it,” reads my Instagram profile, and I aim to record the emotion of places – rarely man-made (why on earth do we create such inhumane spaces for ourselves?) I examine what is glanced, anticipate memories, and capture the wild to preserve what will pass. I am witness to salient aesthetic experiences, surprising collusions of light, color, form, and texture, which, of course, can appear at any moment. It just takes noticing.
Painting and Drawing: With photography as a record of observing the workings of the natural world, I create gestural, spontaneous marks in pencil, pastel, and ink on paper, expressing the rhythms, textures, and moods of each element (sky, water, earth). These often abstract fields of color and texture are then collaged into graphic, imaginary seascapes affixed with needle and thread. I am a coastal creature (and a seasoned graphic designer).
Sculpture: Transforming 2D materials through cutting, twisting, and folding into 3D objects, my sculptural forms embody the spirit of flora and fauna. By manipulating spirals and waves, climbing, infurling, and blooming structures emerge – variations occur with the properties of each material, ideally limited to what I find and collect. Scraps find a purpose, too. Oh, and flowers, lots of flowers. I study and invent them.
