In the series “Values:” the optical pleasures of the eye dance of vision are abstracted to their purest form: black and white in twisting paths over a single color background. In this minimalist field uncluttered by any detail, the paintings explore the depths and pleasures of a many layered visual interplay between light and dark. Taken singly each one is a lovely and unique dance for the eyes that never becomes dull. Taken in pairs or groups we have the beginnings of a discussion of color values held behind a consistent yet changing neutral visual field, and the visual pleasures of the tension connecting and holding the series together even as each piece’s essential element sets it apart.
