Barns Above Songbird Grotto is a 28″x 22″ oil painting of the Spaletta Ranch, in Valley Ford, the far northwest corner of Marin County. It was early morning when I came upon this scene, looking south over a small creek flowing through the ranch’s quarry.
In this location, the creek turns into a waterfall, landing in a deep grotto full of lush plants and extraordinary migratory birds singing!
I love the way the redwood barns have weathered, and it was fun to add the architectural details and the feathery Monterrey Cypress tree. The Marin landscape only looks this wonderfully vivid shade of green in March each year.
