Angelique Benicio’s paintings focus on unguarded characters who encounter a world suddenly understood as more mysterious and vast. Her work evokes both the enchantment and eerie quality of Grimm’s fairytales. While the immediacy of the artist’s oil paintings first draws the viewer in with their lush surfaces and traditional style, undercurrents of a more contemporary and unsettled content gradually surface. Many paintings depict a childlike irrefutable animal instinct. Others reveal an acute awareness of uneasy surroundings. The artist insists that innocence and experience do not advance or recede in time, but always come braided together irrespective of age. Benicio is an artist who lives and works in San Rafael. Her work has been exhibited throughout the Bay Area, as well as in Norway and Brazil.
