I am intrigued by the idea of “beautiful messes!” My language in art is colorful and exciting to me! Bold yet soft, layers of paint and collage build up a surface. I am inspired by the unexpected beauty and juxtaposition in the tension of industry within nature… beautiful tarred designs on asphalt, cracks in the pavement with eager flowers shooting up…. a sole neon pink windsock among hundreds of grey spouting smokestacks. My sense of self is reflected in the quiet intensity of this conversation. My best painting happens spontaneously when I am trusting the process of responding to each movement without thought or the confines of ego. This is a continual inner dialog in “confidence and doubt” or “joy and frustration”. Each painting is a unique expression of my inner world!
Julie Harris is an abstract painter working mainly with acrylic, collage and mixed media. Born and raised on the beaches of southern California her professional background is in fashion and clothing design, specifically in the surf industry. Because of the strong influence of beach culture she finds herself continually attracted to sun-faded washed out colors and is instinctively drawn to the integration of playfulness with quiet reflection, the balancing of energy and calm, much like the ocean. She lives with her (supportive) husband and 2 boys in Marin county and works out of her studio in the ICB building in Sausalito.
