Doreen L. Barton received her BA in Theater Design from the State University of New York at Buffalo. She continued study in the Bay Area at the Atelier School of Classical Realism and the Rob Anderson Studio School. Barton has exhibited her work in shows nationally, focusing on figurative, portrait, and more recently urban scenes. She lives and works in Berkeley, California.
“My initial focus was on the figurative, the human form, along with portraiture. I've since worked en plein air in both urban and rural settings, particularly where objects can be seen in an unsettling placement, or thrown together in a confused jumble. I'm often attracted to seemingly ordinary scenes/images, but with compositions that are unconventional. My parallel interests in late 19th and early 20th century life and costume have lead to a continuing project of pastels derived from period photographs and exhibitions. These explore the differences and similarities of life then and now.”
