DESCRIPTION

A Question of Balance Exhibition

The Museum of Sonoma County (MSC) is pleased to present A Question of Balance: Selected Works from Pacific Rim Sculptors. Artworks for the exhibition were selected by jurors Jeff Nathanson, MSC Executive Director and Art Curator, and Kate Eilertsen, Executive Director and Chief Curator of Di Rosa Center for Contemporary Art.

A call for entries invited artists who are members of Pacific Rim Sculptors to submit artworks addressing the balance-related theme. The invitation included this common definition of ‘balance’: a state of equilibrium or equipoise; equal distribution of weight or amount, or something used to produce equilibrium. Artists were also provided with additional parameters for the exhibition: balance can refer to gravity, mathematics, accounting, opposing ideas or components, balance of power, etc. Additional questions were posed: what does balance mean to you personally or in a larger context? What are the varied and multiple meanings and interpretations of “balance”?

Artists used their own interpretations in materials, techniques, subject matter, or a combination of concepts to address the theme of balance. The resulting exhibition features 45 sculptors representing a diverse range of approaches, techniques, and materials. Included are sculptural works in metal, wood, stone, mixed media, and installation in sizes ranging from nine inches to over 12 feet in height.
