MARIN OPEN STUDIOS CELEBRATES 30TH ANNIVERSARY

This free self-guided tour of Marin art studios has broadened its commitment to diversity with the largest array of events, studios and artist exhibitions since its founding

(Sausalito, CA, January 18, 2023)Marin Open Studios (MOS) is celebrating their 30th Anniversary with a series of openings, special events, a pop-up gallery, and an expanded lineup of locations throughout Marin County.

During Open Studios weekends, art lovers are invited to visit artists in their studios to meet the artists personally, enjoy a portfolio of artworks, and purchase work directly from the artists. The annual free self-guided Open Studios Tour occurs during two weekends: May 5 & 6 and May 13 & 14 from 11AM-6:00PM.

The public is invited to preview artwork from 250 participating artists at the MOS Preview Gallery opening April 29 through May 14 at the Sausalito Center for the Arts, 750 Broadway, where samples of each artist’s work are on display. Driving directions to studios will be available on the website, at the gallery and in a printed guide.

“There is an appetite to purchase original art directly from artists in the Bay Area. And people are fascinated with artists. We create opportunities for people to learn more about art, the artists and their process in our gallery spaces, pop-up galleries, events, and the artists’ own studios,” said Kay Carlson, the co-founder and executive director. An artist herself and advocate for artists throughout the county, she also sits on the board of the new  Sausalito Center For the Arts.

Carlson collaborated with sculptor Tim Rose (who sadly passed away in 2008) in 1993 to create a local event that would allow artists to be financially self-sufficient and build their careers. Their goal was to make artists in the county visible to the community and inspire youth.

With the assistance of philanthropist Peggy Haas, and a grassroots team, they produced the first MOS in 1994. MOS is now a free-standing non-profit with a small Board and staff, a large volunteer base, and ongoing support from the Marin Community Foundation, the Board of Supervisors, local companies, foundations, and individual donors.

About Marin Open Studios (MOS)

In 2023, Marin Open Studios (MOS) celebrates its 30th consecutive year of operation and its mission to support and serve the visual art community in Marin County. It does this primarily through a two-weekend MOS event for established and emerging artists, and also through educational programs offered to artists.

The Diversity and Inclusion program, first launched in 2018, also supports Canal Alliance artists, as well as Marin City Cultural Gallery artists with the intention of strengthening cross cultural understanding and exchange within the art community.

About The Artists

Many artists who participated in MOS in 1994 have seen their careers grow and change, and still choose to participate each year. New artists join, keeping things fresh. MOS has a program to encourage artists working in more diverse media to participate, and to support emerging artists. As MOS moves into its 30th year, it is committed to foster greater inclusion in its programs by artists with many different backgrounds, diversity, and experiences.  Marin Open Studios is still accepting artists for their 30th Anniversary exhibition. Visit the website for details.
