About The Artist

Artist Statement

Beth Davila Waldman is a cross-disciplinary artist using photography, painting, assemblage and installation. Her work explores the impact of socio-political trends on cultural landscapes, often through imagery laden with indicators of economic and social status, presented in a manner that emulates the sheer stress of imposed change. Waldman’s constructed vistas re-conceive the notion of sanctuary amidst the realities of colonization, and invite meditations on civil access.

Biography

Born in Princeton, New Jersey in 1975, Beth Davila Waldman pursued her career in the arts initially at Wellesley College (1997) where she earned a BA with a double degree in art history and studio art, graduating with honors in studio arts with a focus on sculpture. She continued her commitment to exploring site and material as her conceptual focus at the San Francisco Art Institute (2005) with a BFA in sculpture where she was awarded the 2004 Harold E. Weiner Memorial Sculpture Award.

Since, Waldman has been awarded residencies by 18th Street Art Center, Kala Art Institute, Playa Institute, and Edition/Basel and participated in projects at Djerassi Art Residency. In 2019, she was invited to be the introductory Annual PhotoAlliance speaker in conjunction with David Maisel at San Francisco Art Institute’s Osher Lecture Hall. Over the past three years she expanded her studio practice with additional studios in Los Angeles and New York’s Hudson Valley. Waldman’s work has been featured in art fairs in Hong Kong (2019), Mexico City (2023), San Francisco’s ArtMarket (2023) with Kim Eagles Smith Gallery and Berlin (2024) with BLAM presented by IdolWild and Monte Vista Projects Los Angeles. Her work has been featured in the De Young Museum’s OPEN Exhibition in 2020 & 2023 in addition to the Museum of Northern California in 2024. Today, Waldman proudly is a part of the Los Angeles based Monte Vista Projects Curatorial Collective and serves on the San Francisco based PhotoAlliance board. Waldman’s studio is currently at Keystone Art Space in Los Angeles and The ICB Building in the San Francisco Bay Area.
