Marketing your art creates buyers for your work, and Marin Open Studios can give you great exposure. You will receive free publicity from the Tour Guides that are inserted into Marin Magazine and placed in venues around the county. The event is also promoted via signs, the website, the gallery, promotional emails, and other media. Opening your studio gives you a chance to build your brand as an artist, meet interested buyers, and get great feedback from your visitors.
Use social media. Visit the Marin Open Studios Facebook page and “like” us. It’s a good idea to post updates and images to your own Facebook or Instagram page. Create a Facebook event on your home page, blog about your creative process, and post videos of yourself on YouTube. Send emails about your upcoming Marin Open Studios participation to your mailing list. Try Paperless Post to make your email invitations stand out
Printed media: Create a postcard with your favorite image and your studio address and Open Studio dates, and mail it to your list two weeks prior to the first weekend. Place the Marin Open Studios postcards and signs in your neighborhood.
Make sure your studio is clean and inviting. Offer light refreshments. Display a variety of work, but don’t overwhelm the viewer. You can create a catalog or slide show on your computer of additional work. Offer art in a variety of price points. You can create prints and notecards for the lower price range. Many people prefer framed art, so consider framing as many pieces as you can.
Display your business cards, brochures and email sign-up list in a prominent location.
Email a thank you note to all the visitors who signed up for your mailing list. Let them know the dates of upcoming exhibits. Offer to meet regarding commissions. You never know when a previous visitor will be ready to purchase.
Sign up for next year’s Marin Open Studios program. It takes several years to create a pipeline of interested buyers.
