Oil and cold wax
Desert Map focuses on the expressive qualities of paint and the translucence of painting with wax added to oil. The juxtaposition of warm and cool colors creates interest while the blend of ochre and tan with patches of blue and green allude to an ancient map.
The appearance of a thick paint application was achieved by layering oil paint mixed with cold wax. While some layers were applied and left, others were scraped off to reveal previous marks. The edges of the colors are often blurred, contributing to the sense of fluidity. The painting surface is a thin lightweight multimedia artboard that was glued to a wood panel using a professional quality gel medium.
