Shelter-in-place inspired a focus on my immediate surroundings and a full immersion in the art of the in-camera double exposure. The San Francisco 2020s-series features images in which San Francisco street art has been merged with San Francisco street scenes by overlaying a previously taken photograph onto a new scene in-camera. Each image tells multiple stories: that of the street artist, that of the street scene, and by combining the two, mine. Together they will tell a slice of San Francisco’s story in a unique way. The Salty Chic-series is my ode to the Sausalito waterfront, the place I call home. By adding a pinch of local salt to beautifully adorned mannequins, I aim to visually express the magic of the symbiosis of salty and chic that is Sausalito. Creating these in-camera double exposures is like a matchmaking process. I first capture a mannequin in a shop window with an eye to eligibility. The properties of this image – all aspects of light as well as the color of both the subject and negative space – inform what may make for a good match technically. I then take the image for a walk along Sausalito’s waterfront and let it determine what I see until there is a visual click, the potential for a striking pair. I may be able to capture it right there and then, or I go back till I get it just right. Whereas the San Francisco 2020s-series is about telling a story, the Salty Chic-series is about the joy of a purely visual exploration, loosely based on a concept and joining local voices that call for keeping Sausalito salty.
Born and raised in the Netherlands, Sausalito houseboat community resident, career in mediating and facilitating peace processes around the world, street photographer. Most influential photography teacher and mentor: Ricardo Barros, with whom I studied in Princeton, NJ. --- I photograph because I love how it makes me feel in the moment, out in the street. Exploring how to best capture what catches my eye is a meditative experience for me: total immersion, no distraction; time stands still. --- I photograph for myself, but enjoy sharing the resulting images as well as the creative process that went into achieving them.
