“Our lives are simply the pursuit of internal fantasies, complicated by the external realities we confront, as we pass through this plane of existence. My recent works have been large-scale portraits of amazing and yet ordinary people from chance encounters. Painting in an expressive realism style, I attempt to reveal spirit and fortitude. I believe the purpose of art is to communicate, and with my paintings, I communicate hope through a celebration of the vitality of humanity.”

Stephen Mangum is a representational painter from San Francisco. Born in 1954 in Mississippi and a graduate of the San Francisco Art Institute, he has been juried into and won awards in numerous competitions and featured in art journals and other publications. Painting in an expressive realism style, his most recent works have been large-scale portraits of amazing but ordinary people from chance encounters in which he seeks to find the beauty inherent in the human spirit. His work is in private collections across the U.S.
