SOMOS Cartographies of Belonging
SOMOS a verb , in the present tense. Somos means we are… as in we are HERE, NOW… and we are… fully present-
In this context, the title is imbued with dignity, the right to be , and the worthiness of our collective voices. It is NOT attempting to explain or justify who we are — it is simply anaffirmation. The way we see it, SOMOS speaks to a shared reality among this group: SOMOS Alejandra, Carlos, Guillermo, Isidoro , Jinjer, Laura, Licita , Manuel, Marion, Oscar, Sol y Vladimir — WE are ALL coalescing across cultures, across disciplines, and across our stories… ALL this, without reducing any one experience to a single narrative.
Cartographies of Belonging invites us to think of each artwork on this walls as a form of mapping — not in the traditional sense of maps, of borders or fixed territories, but maps of lived experience.
Our identities shaped by Memory, Migration, Labor, Language, Family and Community.
These are all elements that overlap and continue to evolve creating many pathways to belonging rather than a fixed track. Just like a map. Together, the these two components honors both dignity and multiplicity.
Across painting, sculpture, photography, and digital storytelling, the works in this exhibition form a shared atlas — one that reflects where we come from, where we stand, and how we continue to shape the places we inhabit.
As artists our practices, our stories, and the generosity in sharing these works make our exhibition what it is. Each them contribute a vital thread to this collective cartography.
